Night market nowadays is no longer a phenomenal, specially in a mix-culture country like Canada. Night market reflects a long history, a rich culture. However, in each place, there is something very special which attract tons of visitors.
We took a Sea bus from Waterfront Station to Lonsdale Quay. Shipyard Night Market is located at Shipbuilders’ Square – 15 Wallace Mews, North Vancouver.
The very first thing that astounded us was the mesmerizing beauty of the view, Waterfront never seemed to be that lovely. Walked for 10 minutes on the pavement along with the quay edge, we reached Shipyard Night Market. As what we expected, Shipyard is totally different from other night market that I have been before. The pace is not too rushing, and the atmosphere is not too crowded as a normal night market. People enjoy the fresh air also the tasty food.

The Shipyard Night Market was created by vendors since 2011 and specifically by Ingrid Doerr. Now, there are dozens of food trucks and jewelry, accessories vendors. This is called the best pop-up weekend eating destination in Vancouver. It is held every Friday night from 5 pm to 10 pm during Summer, which is from May to September. We were so fortunate to find out about this night market in the last week which was on the 27th of September. If you are an eataholic, you probably will like being in a night market, and Shipyard would be a nice place for you to taste food and enjoy the slow pace of life here in North Shore, plus the breathtaking view from the Quay.
What do they have in Shipyard Night Market?
LOCAL FOOD TRUCK
It was a luminous Friday afternoon; our team members were all ravenous while heading to the Shipyards night market. The first thing is our sight is tacos and somehow our team is known as Tacos Lovers, so the first thing we ordered that taco. We got beef brisket tacos with pickled onion, gives a little bit sweet flavor, spicy, a little bit smoky but unfortunately, there was one thing we did not like about is that it was not good-looking, small portion, lettuce, and onions aren’t fresh. You could set your mind at rest about the cleanliness here. All the staff in the tacos stall wear-red gloves when they served food. The only minus point here was they served drinks and food at the same table, so you could feel a little messy in their organization.
After finished tacos, we jumped to the next dish which called Salty’ s Lobster Shack, Lobster Grilled Cheese Sandwich the flavor was the best with a mix of the creamy sweetened, perfect combination of cheese and lobster meat. The bread is the bomb that was toasted with butter very well and a slice of cheese was put on the top. Sound likes fancy food selling at a cheap price. I know you might think about their quality, supplies or even hygiene. I could make sure that you would satisfy and well-earned after tasted this bread. It’s might not the best Lobster bread you have, but it’s worthy of what you have spent. The important thing is that you would not worry about hygiene, isn’t it cool? Everything was clean and tidy. Foods were served in the recycling paper containers. Besides, they had a separate area to add ketchup and chili sauce. If you are a cheese lover or just simply want to try a lobster taste but worry about its price, I will recommend you try this food truck
We finished loaves of bread, we decided to walk around and enjoyed the sunshine, we then caught buttery smell and we decided to follow that scent. Surprisingly, we found a food truck that they sold corn, called JJ’s Hot Cob, they had fresh steamed corn with butter and customer can customize their own ones. At this food truck, you might feel like you’re coming back to the rural area and of course, the rural food is definitely fresh and the method they cook foods are very “rural” too. Everything here was pretty simple, there were only two guys with a brazier and a butter pot. For me, the most professional area here was the flavor table. They had totally more than 7 flavors that you can add on your corn and of course this area would not always tidy because there was so busy here. People incessantly come and go.
After the main dishes, we extremely needed dessert and it was so interesting to note that all the team members are the sweet tooth. Chimney cake ice cream which is Hungary dessert is the best option for us. One of the best cinnamon cones, fresh-baked rolled pastry to perfection, fill them with soft ice-cream and finally finished off with salted chocolate drizzle on the top.
I would say that it’s was not easy to buy this cinnamon cone, you need to prepare yourself to line a long line at this food truck. But you would feel happy and pleasant to line up here and forget about the time because you could see all the process to make a Slavic roll here from kneading, shaped to grilling.
All the processes were made by a very funny man, who had a performance like Salt Bae when he added sugar on a grilled Slavic roll. But I was curious about their flavors. They had around 6 flavors Nutella, banana, apple, raspberry, vanilla and chocolate. All of this was contained in clear plastic boxes with a food wrapper on it. It looks like handmade flavors. I still don’t know how they preserve it, how long it was.
Another thing I could see here is the way they arrange everything in this limited space was messy. On the right side was a space for making Slavic roll and a baker. At the back was a sink with 2 or 3 bottles of cleaning liquid and many other things like a big sugar box, machines, some new plastic cups, wrapper and towel. At the fond was a line of soda, 6 boxes of flavors and a half of this side were for the rolling tools.
Moreover, to catch up on food trend many food trucks selling veggie, organic foods, or handmade products like chocolate or vodka, so I think this is a big bonus point for this event. Even you are a fastidious person, I believe you can also find food that can satisfy you here
GOOD DRINKS The most exciting part is that we tried vodka, that spot called “Son of Vancouver” and all the vodka is made from North Vancouver, as recognized a local thing. Bird’s Eye Chili vodka, the most disparate thing we have ever tried, it was getting to scorch in our throat once we drank and it is like another watered-down version with hot sauce. It seems like a very good one when we saw the customers came and told us how much they love this vodka. We then decided to get one without a doubt, because the holiday season is coming, so why not?
Sustainability is always a concern for night market since the massive of directions, food wastes and garbage from pedestrians. However, Shipyard Night market is considered as a most sustainable night market with a great mission statement: only generate some bags of garbage each event and that garbage will be sorted for recycling by high school students.
# HANDMADE CRAFTS
Just like the previous years the market has kept its uniqueness by providing the sellers with wide and great collection of hand made crafts, jewelleries, classic paintings and various kinds of hand made creations crafted with care and love for everybody to enjoy and acknowledge.
They have the freshest food items and locally prepared products, trust me that these farmers always have smiles on their faces and guaranteed fresh veggies and fruits.
As everyone is aware about the popularity of various kinds of beer and cider so why does such a great market could be missed by the localities in representing their locally made alcohol, wines which could never be resisted with such a great varieties and taste and taking it to the next level of creating the best loving experience at shipyards market.
#LIVE MUSIC ON THE ROLL
With the live music performances by the local bands take the satisfaction levels to the top. The magic of music with the food surely blow up your senses and make it the busiest nights of your life.
#SWEET LOVERS How could a market would complement the sweet lovers without sugar, ice cream, chocolates, syrups, donuts. We could find various sweets outlets like pocket pies, small kisses ice creams and cotton candy.
Making it the best market to gather with your family, friends and loved ones. Come together enjoy the unlimited variety of food, listen to the sharpness and the magic of music with a little alcohol and enjoy the little breeze of wind.
