After half year of break, Richmond Night Market is finally back on in Vancouver. With its return, there are various kind of food to experience. Last week, I had a chance to visit the Night Market – the largest night market in north America- with my team. This is an amazing festival for anyone who wants to have an outside dinner. With more than an a hundred stalls and each offering up to five different items the options are endless
As soon as I went through security, I was overwhelmed by the delicious food counters in front of me. There are more than 200 food stalls within the area which made it hard to choose what to eat. While walking around the food area, I suddenly discovered an attractive stall that sold my absolute favorite food- Meat Skewers! Obviously, it would be a miss if you didn’t try the famous Night Market meat skewers. On their menu, it offered a lot of options to choose from such as ribeye steak, spicy pork, garlic chicken, and juicy lamb shoulder. I was told that they use the most tender and fresh meat. This is me to preserve the juiciness of the product, so they never use defrosted meat or pre-grill meat to serve to customer which make me can’t help to trying. Then I decided to try two ribeye, 1 pork and 1 chicken for all for twelve dollars which when considered how the portions could feed 2 people is cheap.
After 5 minutes of waiting, I was able to indulge in the unbelievable juicy and delicious meat. You could tell the meat was juicy and tender just by its look. The chicken and pork were good even though it was only seasoned with salt and pepper. However, the star of this night was the ribeye steak, I was speechless when I had the first bite. The meat was melting into my mouth, the tenderness and moisture made me feel like I was having a steak at a fancy restaurant in Downtown.

Deep-fried potato skewers
I was shocked because of the size of the market and I did not know which dish was the best. I tried to take a general look at some food vendor lines and checked out the most popular food map. Then I decided to head straight to the ROTATO booth – the must try deep-fried potato skewers. This was a good choice for “appetizer” dinning – the dish consists of a spiral of potato skewered on a stick, and then deep-fried and sprinkled with seasoning such as cheese, salt, roast garlic or vinegar. I picked roast garlic flavor which a little bit salty for me but luckily the crunchy potato saved the dish. The overall taste was pretty good!
After finishing “appetizer” , I was seeking for another dish. I would love to choose some seafood, and Mr. Crabzy was my selection. There were three types of seafood such as fish balls, mango shrimp balls and stuffed crab claws with three flavours including original, new orleans and garlic. The picture of stuffed crab claws was really eye-catching and made me really want to eat, but it was expensive ($13.99/2pcs and $17.75/3pcs). Although it was expensive, the dish was worth it for the price. It was crab claw stuffed with even more crab meat – with breadcrumb outside and deep-fried the whole crab claw. The butter sauce and fish-eggs were put on top made the dish looked super savory. Oh my god! The flavor was blended together after the first bite – extremely tasty. The outside was crispy but the inside was juicy – what a perfect dish for out dinning.
Korean fried chicken with mozzarella cheese
As we were walking around and looking at all the stalls, I saw an unique name from the corner “Chicking”. It was a big sign with an attractive menu full of pictures and easy to read. I decided to have a try with the Korean fried chicken. Korean fired chicken is famous. When talking about Korean culture it is never missed. With several different kinds, I noticed that the menu was shorted into five options. Firstly, the famous yangneom chicken which was fried chicken with sweet chilli sauce. It is an traditional dish in Korea. The next one is the popular honey soy garlic. This may be the most famous one. Another unique menu is the creamy onion. It is fried chicken with sitr-fry onion and creamy sauce. Another option is Pa-dak which is sweet and spicy sauce chicken with green onion on top. And lastly cheese falls, is the one that interests me. It was topped with mozzarella cheese. Therefore, I decided to buy a medium size of cheese falls to have a taste of the unique dishes.
The crispy fried chicken was covered with the honey soy sauce and topped with a thick cheese blanket. The chicken was crispy outside but very moist inside. It was a wonderful texture that make me to have more after the first bite. The chicken was really soft and it was more flavourful with the sweet honey soy sauce. The melted mozzarella cheese added the creamy flavour and made for an amazing combination with the sweet sauce.
The Lightbulb Drink.
Created by Rainbulb, the drinks have become famous at the market. One can enjoy a sweet drink with a range of flavours from citrus lime, grapefruit, apple, melon, orange and mango. I went for the citrus lime mainly because green is one of my favourite colours. The drink when it is handed to you is flashing through the green liquid. As I walked around the market I noticed the lights altered between slow, fast and strobe like flashing. This made for a fun drink that I did take a photo with but ultimately I found the drink too sweet for my liking. But overall, for the fun memory and the photo this drink is without a doubt successful.
