A Bit Of History
Dunn’s is known for its Montreal style smoked meat, which is quite popular in QUEBEC province because, this Restaurant first franchise founded in Montreal, in 1927, almost 93 years ago at Avenue Papineau near Avenue du Mont-Royal and the founder of the food franchise is Myer Dunn, they serve in 17 locations in all over Canada. Especially in Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia province.
Myer Dunn immigrated to Canada in 1911, started his business in the food industry in 1927 but in 1948, he opened his first restaurant to be called Dunn’s famous Delicatessen and after that, he and his team started gaining the attention of food lovers plus they started gaining handsome revenue form food and drinks. Mr. Dunn decided to expand his business by launching his flagship after 7 years at Saint Catherine Street (West). The entrance of the store was famous for the top line of stacks of medium and large bars full of hot banana peppers. It was eye-catching for many customers and visitors because it was situated in the core of the Downtown area. Moreover, the kitchen was open 24 hours a day, which was a bit unique at that time. But after a decade this branch was closed, and they opened a new branch at Metcalfe Street in 2000 on the premises of Dunn’s grandson.
In the mid-1980s Dunns’ smoked meat was gaining popularity, because of its taste and aroma when suddenly it got into trouble with the Bill 101 which was a Quebec government amendment that French was introduced as an official language and all of the contents of restaurant must be in French but Dunn’s denied to change their signature dish name in French language because then it would be difficult for the customers to eye catch the name of Smoked Meat, so they decided to fight for it and in 1987, the new government enacted that the word ‘smoked meat’ would be in both of the official languages of Canada because “Everyone knows what smoked meat is. You can’t put another name on it and accept people to think it’s the same thing”. Moreover, Dunn’s was serving a unique menu in their initial years. There wasn’t any, and there was no such thing as dessert. The decor of the restaurant is vintage and people from the age of 35 to 45 were frequent customers. Smoked meat lovers might ask for the Nash or corner of smoked meat brisket that’s tender as filet (small, $2; large, $3). Dunn’s prepare their Montreal smoked meat with the old-fashioned way by using his unique traditional blend of herbs. First, each beef brisket is marinated for six days to lock-in that smokehouse flavor, then it is marinated and brined for 14 hours, and steamed to perfection for an additional three. Myer loved his restaurant, the way his food is cooked, and to bring more revenue to the business he started showing interest in inviting families and friends to his restaurant. Because he was the reputed person of the community, he always entertained and communicated with his customers so that he could make a strong bond with them.
So How’s Their Food?
Sandwich and burgers are some of the common food items ordered by most of the customers. Now a day’s people are attracted to these types of food items because it is easily available and takes only less time to prepare it, most of the fast-food restaurants and hotels provide these food items to their customers. Franchises like Burger King, Subway, DQ are famous for these food items.
It is said that the first sandwich was made back in the 1st century BC by Rabbi Hillel with bread apples and nuts. Later as the times pass by there were many changes in sandwich making now there are different types of sandwiches available. Sandwiches are stomach filler as they were no more than edible concrete, so instead of choosing the regular ones which are available in subways we thought to try something different. Smoked Meat grilled cheese sandwich is one among them. It looked steamy and fresh. It is a combination of melted white cheese and juicy smoked meat paired with hot mustard placed between two pieces of toasted rye bread. Served with a kosher dill pickle for the best experience. The bread is something to hold the whole mustard pack.it was crispy, with a rough texture and lightweight and cheesy flavor with melted beef aroma. The filling was seemed to be layers of cheese and it was dripping. The chopped beef was the best of all those, it was fresh and fiery and zesty.
Hamburger was introduced in the 19th or early 20th century. It was called hamburger in those days as it got its name from the Germany city ‘Hamburg’. The burgers which we see today are developed as a part of social change to satisfy the human needs especially the working class as per the evidence the USA was the first country that served two sliced bread with steak in between. Within a short time, hamburgers became the representation of American cuisine. Then there were developments such as using trimming onion, lettuce and sliced pickles for people who are vegetarians especially in some parts of India where beef is not part of the Hindu diet and the one with beef and chicken for others. This concept was started to spread from one place to another. Among the burgers, Slow roasted beef and mushroom Burger is one of the famous Burger served in the Dunn’s restaurant. The mushroom which isn’t any kind of vegetable or fruit tastes better when it is cooked as it has a meaty texture and flavor, and a dense aroma based on the cheese or ketchup added to it. The main ingredients are ground beef, roasted mushroom base, chopped onion, egg, a small amount of parsley, cilantro, dill, and the long hamburger buns. It was warmed before serving, so the aroma of mushroom was all around and the steamy juice was dripping from the buns, the mushroom was marinated in a tangy sauce which was grilled perfectly. I added some tomato ketchup to make it tastier.

Thus I was a bit taken aback when this arrived at the table…
Unlike your typical spaghetti, Dunn offers a rather unique take on the dish. For the most important part, the sauce, instead of the popular creamy tomato-based sauce, Dunn’s cover their pasta in a light and mildly seasoned meat-based sauce called Bolognese, which allows other ingredients to shine. The star of the show, also the restaurant’s best feature, the smoked meat, chopped and added on top, gives the dish a very deep and sophisticated flavor which once you had tried, you wouldn’t be able to stop, and before you know it, it is all gone. Those chunks of wonders also provide the dish with a hint chewiness thanks to their slightly rough texture on the outside but tender and juicy on the inside. The spaghetti is also topped with grated parmesan that melts and infuses the dish with a subtle cheese flavor and a pinch of fresh parsley which balances out the dish’s meaty and cheesy flavor. It also adds to it a slight bitterness, even furthering its flavor complexity. Finally, to heighten its elegance, the already gorgeous bowl of pasta is then served with two slices of crispy garlic toast placed crossing one another, which, to be fair, does manage to give it a subtle fine dining look. Though you cannot help but feel like the toasts are only there for the sake of decoration as aside a bit of crunch, they do not contribute much to the dish’s flavor profile.
To be completely honest, ordering a dessert at a restaurant where you have smoked meat as the main feature, to quote Macmillan Dictionary’s definition of the phrase “whistling in the dark”, is like “pretending to feel confident about a situation when in fact you feel nervous or worried.” Regardless, Dunn’s Famous manage to pull it off and surprise their customers with their simple yet delicious Red Velvet Cake. The cake is layered with cream cheese filling, brownie chunks and then served with vanilla whipped cream. Do not let the simplicity fool you though, as this baby is to die for once you sink your teeth into it. The thick cream cheese is both delicately sweet and creamy, the brownies are rich and melt right into your mouth, and the fluffy whipped cream just infuses the cake with an aromatic vanilla flavor. The absolute best part about it though is the texture of the whole cake. It is dense yet utterly soft and fulfilling, so much so that you feel like you are having a sweet and gentle baby cloud in your mouth somewhere in your cake paradise. It is just the perfect way to end a meal.

Overall, for just $48.30, you will get a good meal enough for up to 4 people at Dunn’s. It’s a great place if you are looking for a something relatively inexpensive, one that still tastes great, fills you up, and especially looks gorgeous on your Instagram.
Decoration, Cleanliness, And Services
When it comes to Dunn’s Restaurant’s atmosphere and decoration, it is a great combination between classic and modern style. The first thing that comes into customers’ minds when they take a step into the restaurant is “Don’t forget where you came from” because the first images of the walls around them show about Dunn’s history. It tells guests about its own story with the identified huge logo on the wall and is proud of its reputation when it established from 1927.
The next of the wall satisfies customers’ curious about Dunn’s history when it shows them more with white and black photos about its original. And, the beyond wall is painted by the red-brown color with the photos of the first owner who found the famous Dunn’s system. Moreover, using the walls made by the red-brown bricks are an excellent choosing for the classic design. Besides other decorations like chairs and lights also use the black and red color as a bold, hip, and edgy point for this style. Even though the restaurant also pay attention to minor details like the design of menu and the food lines paper, all created a cohesive combination. However, the white ceiling brings a spacious feeling and a modern look associated with the warm-light lights.
The doors made by glasses created a opened space for customers who can look at the streets, people in front of the restaurant. Using the great lights help to illuminate its inspired nice food and set customers’ smooth state of mind up. The wood floor minimizes the noise and the classic music helps the guests to feel more relaxed with a cozy and comfy atmosphere at Dunn’s. Because of the smart design, each table at the Dunn’s provides a nice look for the customers when they take a sit.
Related to the service and cleanliness, Dunn’s provides a professional service and the facility is keep organized and clean. Cleanliness plays an essential role in the success of any restaurants simply because no one want to eat at a duty restaurant. Also, keeping everything is not clean, which causes a good environment for the development of germs and bacteria. This means it would kill the business. The dishes are clean to inspire to guest and make them feel delicious. Dunn’s keeps the kitchen, utensil, table, and dishes in a clean and organized situation and makes sure each customer who has a clean eating area. This is crucial because not only it plays an important role in the success of Dunn’s, but also it protects customers’ health. One more thing, the servers at Dunn’s are polite and nice. They take care customers’ satisfaction carefully, which contributes to Dunn’s success as a whole. The three aspects is a measuring scale to help customers to value the quality of a restaurant.
